In this, it is much more like a play than a game.
In some of these player-directed choices, the player is given the chance to recieve all the data, in some, s/he is not.ĭespite the number of choices that are given to the player in the story, the outcome is the same in the end, which may make some players feel cheated by the whole experience. Talking with Charlemagne, for instance, he asks "Excuse me, but what were we discussing again?" and a list of choices come up. In addition, some of the text sections require the player to make a choice, which determines the outcome of the next page. Some of these movies are also shown before the text, and some contain brief nudity. In the text portions of the program, several icons lead to quotes or brief movies illustrating some action in the story or illustrating action not shown in the primary story.
The main story is in text, which can either be read by the player, read by the player with music in the background, or presented as dramatic text, using the voices contained in the program. The Madness of Roland is a strange mix of book, play and game.
